Solem Quartet: American Connections
Exploring the connections between the USA and Europe, this lunchtime concert from the Solem Quartet features two key American works from the String Quartet canon.
William Grant Still’s Lyric Quartet serves as a musical portrait of some of the composers closest friends and uses vernacular American music as starting points for is jazzy and melodic writing. The last movement of the work quotes bohemian folk music in a playful surprise and leads on satisfyingly to Dvorak’s well-loved 'American' Quartet. Famous for its use of spirituals, this work was written during Dvořák’s time in New York and looks at music traveling in the opposite direction: the USA through a European lens.
