We start our European journey in Crete, courtesy of the ballet music from Mozart’s opera Idomeneo. Ballets in opera was an idea imported from France, and staying with the French connection, L’Horloge de Flore ("Flower Clock") by Jean Françaix is a delightful neo-classical concertante work for oboe and orchestra. Particularly jaunty is the Malabar Jasmine that heralds midday!
After the interval we head to Algiers via Italy with a typically lively Rossini number before our European odyssey ends in Austria with Schubert’s third symphony. Schubert was a mere 18 years old when he wrote the work yet the music already teems with his trademark melodic style.
This concert will last approximately 2 hours (including an interval).
